Many of our Angus producer friends have asked "Why Lowines?"

  • Lowlines and Lowline Angus Composites are EFFICIENT!!!

  • They are a perfect fit for grass-fed beef.

  • Lowlines ARE Angus--with smaller frame--while retaining all the beef advantages of
Angus, particularly on grass!  In 2007, the smaller cow proved to be worth her weight
in gold, with poor weather conditions, poor pasture conditions, and High Feed Costs!

  • Use a Lowline bull for ALL first calf heifers and no worry at calving!  Four years of
100% live calves using Lowline bulls  at 'Cross Creek Farms.   In cow/calf production,
    this rarely happens!

  • There is a very real place for halfblood Lowlines in the commercial cattle business!  At
'Cross Creek, our track record proves it, with 83.3% graded choice, and 100% YG 1's
    and 2's!!!!

  • A fullblood Lowline bull crossed with some darn good Angus cows yield halfblood
Lowlines and super cows--look like Angus in the 1950's and 1960's!  At age 4, these
cows will weigh 1100# to 1400#,  frame score 4-5, and are wide bodies.

  • Could you benefit from a 40% increase in retail product per acre?  Lowlines will do
that,  primarily due to higher stocking rate and higher percent retail product yield.

  • This higher than normal retail yield has been documented repeatedly by ultra sound
measurements in the US and Australia that consistently show a 30% larger ribeye area
    per hundred weight.

  • This has translated into a boneless retail product yield of 20 to 30% more retail
product per hundred weight of carcass in preliminary totally boned out product testing
    here in the US.

  • It comes down to more dollars of profit, and that works for everyone!

Lowline Cattle ~ Matching Calving Ease with Value on the Rail

      North Dakota State University
      Dickinson Research Extension Center

A recent 3 year study ending in 2006,
finds good results for matching calving
      ease with red meat production
using
      Lowline bulls.

      Commercial heifers were bred to
      Lowline bulls for calving ease--
only

3 calves out of 125 needed minor assistance.

These steers were sent to commercial feed yards with the above results (see chart).  The
steers average weight for the thee year study was 1221 lbs., 51-52 inches  at the hip, and
brought 92 cents per pound average.
"These bulls produce small calves that grow."

"One can start to think of how these calves will fit into the ever-changing world of beef
feeding. Energy sources are getting more competitive, which ultimately may change some
principles as to what works. There are many boxes of picture puzzles, so don't be afraid to
pick one, even if it is just a little outside the norm."
